Liz at Successful Blog has a great post on Are you a freelancer or a solo entrepreneur?

It’s particularly interesting for me because it’s something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately.

In my conversations with bloggers who work alone, I found some distinct differences in the way they approach their work, in the way they talk about it, in the way that they relate to every part of it. I’ve found that two groups seem to stand out. I call the groups freelancers and solo entrepreneurs.

She then gives us a list so that we can sort out which group we fall into.

I’ve been self-employed for a quite a while now, and make a very good living at all the various things that I do. And when I look back,I’ve always been both a freelancer with an entrepeneurial mindset, and an entrepreneur with a freelance spirit. :)

Going through the list, I see that I have a foot in both groups.

I left the corporate world of professional practice, and I guess that kind of background and training never really does leave you. Since that time, I’ve worn many hats and tackled many different projects.

I’m a doer, but I’m also a planner.

My work has always been about opportunities. I’m always thinking about which opportunities to pursue, where they will take me, and how the end result will fit into my current vision.

I’ve always had a vision of where I want my work to grow, but it’s important to me that that vision be a fluid, ever-evolving thing.

I think that’s why blogging is such a good match for me. To me, blogging is about the doing, but it’s also about having a vision.

So Liz’s question comes at a good time for me, a time when I’ve been thinking about moving towards incorporating more blogging into my life. Not necessarily being a full-time blogger, because I’ve got too many things I love to do to want to pursue any one thing full-time. But definitely I’ve been thinking about tipping the time angle more into the blogging and less into other things.

Which is where the vision comes in. I can’t imagine myself moving towards more blogging without having a vision of where the work will utlimately be growing.

Ever since I quit my job to start out on my own, I’ve always walked along a fluid, flexible entrepreneurial path. Ideas - conception and implementation - have always been very important. That is a big part of my vision for where I want my work to grow.

So, as a blogger, does all this make me a freelancer or a solo entrepeneur? I think I’m both - the best of both worlds. Of course.

Anyone else find that they are both?
